I made dal independently for the first time while in college! This is the most bare bones dal recipe and can be made with very few ingredients.

Overview
Rinse and soak 3/4 cup of dal in 1 cup of water.
Put instant pot in saute mode and add mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
Add oil and fry garlic, onion, chilies for a few minutes.
Once onions become translucent, add tomatoes and cook for another five minutes.
Add half a spoon of salt.
Add dal and about 2 additional cups of water.
Stir and add one spoon of salt.
Cook on low pressure for 30 minutes.
After done cooking, add a bit of chopped cilantro.
Enjoy with rice or rotis!
